T&T: Hockey Puck GPS and USB Adapters - NOT!

I asked the original question and it had nothing to do with converting
serial to USB. I already have a cable for that and it works just fine.

I wanted to know the best hockey puck GPS. Then we got into PS2 plugs vs
USB and I got lost. I would like to know why anyone would buy a hockey puck
GPS that has anything but a USB plug? Do the other ones work better?

i wonder if we dont' have some confusion here... are we talking about
harware to convert Serial to USB or software?

afaik, most nav software can only communicate with a GPS using serial
ports
so whenever you connect a USB or BT GPS to a computer you need some kind
of
serial emulator/driver to convert the data coming over the USB port to a
standard serial port (COM x) the software can recognize

for USB GPs, the software/driver is supplied by the GPS manufacturer...
like Garmin or the Delorme serial emulator.

when using bluetooth GPS, it's a little easier since the bluetooth Serial
Port Profile is built in Vista. Any BT GPS should be compatible with BT
SPP
and work out of the box. Once linked, it's jsut a matter of looking up
the
COM port in the BT manager and setting your nav software to listen to
that
COM port.
