AIS is completely worthless...
...except when it's the best navigation tool available

AIS is the best navigation tool ever created...
    ...except when it's worthless

These kinds of statements are so typical of anything on the left side
of the data-infomation-knowledge-wisdom chain. AIS is very good at
producing data. Matched with a chartplotter, it can even give some
basic information. What we really want at our helm is knowledge and
an understanding of our environment to allow us humans to make better
decisions. Perhaps we gain and share wisdom when we're done boating
and relay our experiences across T&T.

In the end, I guess I'd rather have AIS and decide at times to turn it
off than to be out somewhere wishing that I had it.
