If you are talking about those gray colored hose fittings, there is an explaination. The gray fittings are made for irrigation hose, commonly used on farms and ranches. It was explained to me that they are intensionally made larger than "normal" so, in the field, hose can be forced on and used without hose clamps.
Whenever I am forced to use a "gray colored" fitting, I always assume that I'm going to have to grind off the barbs to get standard hose to fit on it, hose clamped also.
Although it seems simple, I've done this, and when not being too diligent with the grinding, had the joint leak, probably from ending up with an oval fitting, not round. Does happen too often, but every great once in awhile, when I'm rushed and not paying attention...
In the small "1/2" size, don't ever belief it. The fitting always measurers 5/8 and grinding off the barbs to fit 1/2" is a given. Yes, heating the hose will work, but I ususally find grinding off the barbs simpler in the long run, especially when the installation is in a challenging location to begin with.
