The marina in the old port of Montreal is a terrific place to be based for
your visit. Having said that, you won't really be in the "real" Montreal;
you'll be in the international district. There are lots of great
restaurants, shops, etc. but to visit the city you need to get away from the
port.
I'd recommend starting by taking a two hour bus tour. The tour guide will
point out the various neighborhoods you'll want to visit later. Take the
subway, a bus or a cab when you're ready to go out on your own. The number
of people who speak are willing to speak English will drop but you'll still
have a great time. A simple Bonjour to show you're making an effort is all
it will take.
As far as courtesy flags go, we always flew the provincial flag in addition
to the Canadian flag. After stopping here, you'll no doubt want to head
down river to Quebec City.
These are cruising grounds that too many miss and unfortunately it's often
because someone scares them away with ill-founded stories about the French
Canadians. These are terrific people who love to share their
country/province. (Just don't discuss separatism!)
