THIS IS AN EMAIL FROM THE LIST ADMINISTRATOR

A few recent events on the T&T List warrant a reminder to all
subscribers about how the list operates and how you can manage your
subscriber's account.

First. Please remember that the T&T List (and all other lists sponsored
by Trawlers-and-Trawlering) is NOT a moderated list. That means that all
posts to the list go out to all subscribers without human intervention.
A few posts might get held for action by one of our Administrative Team,
but those are extremely rare. If an email is held for approval and
subsequently approved, no editing takes place - it goes to the list as is.

Second. The list software (MailMan) automatically strips out all html,
graphics, and attachments. IOW, you can't send any attachments to the
list, nor can you use html-formatting anywhere in your posts or include
graphics; if you do, it will get stripped out and then forwarded on to
the list. The reason for this: it eliminates viruses and other bad stuff
from the T&T email you receive, as well as saves a great deal of
band-width for those subscribers who pay by the kilobyte for their email
access.

This brings up the use of "emoticons," those funny-face thingies that
some subscribers like to put in the text of their emails to show a wink
;-) meaning just kidding, a smile :-) etc. If you use the keyboard to
enter these emoticons, they will come through as intended. However, some
email clients (AOL as a perfect example) insert a graphic for the
emoticon; you can guess what happens - it gets stripped by the MailMan
software so the emoticon doesn't come through in the post to the list.
As an example of a recent situation this week, a subscriber intended for
a statement to be tongue-in-cheek and inserted an AOL-based emoticon (a
graphic) into his posting to show that he was kidding; when it reached
the list, the emoticon had been removed and the statement appeared to be
an extremely unfriendly remark.

Third. With summer comes vacations of various lengths for subscribers.
Some of you work in an environment where it is important to let
customers/clients know that you're not answering their email, and
consequently send an "out of office" response to all incoming email;
email sent to that account from the T&T List also results in a return
email to the list showing that the subscriber is not available. When
that happens, we have no choice but to set the account status to
"nomail" and the subscriber will need to contact us upon his/her return
to reset the account and again receive email from the list. Please set
your account to "nomail" as described below and then you can reset it
yourself when you return.

If you're not going to be able to delete email from your inbox while
you're away from your computer, you can set your subscriber account to
"nomail" in which case none of the list posts will be sent to you; when
you return you can remove the "nomail" status and start receiving your
email again. Setting the "nomail" status for your account helps prevent
your inbox from filling with the result that list email to your account
"bounces" in which case your account will automatically be disabled by
the list software.

You can manage your own account (set "nomail" status, change email
address, get password, etc) by following the link in every T&T List
email (including the digest version of the list):

As always, if you have any questions about how the list operates, please

or send an email to trawlers-and-trawlering-owner at lists.samurai.com

or contact me directly.
