John,
I'll probably echo what others have replied, our 10 ft caribe with a 15
HP Yamaha 4 stroke planes with 2 adults, 110 lbs of dogs, and full fuel.
It is electric start, so add a grp 24 battery to that. 4 adults will not
plane, unless the combined weight is under 500 lbs.
I'd love to either have a 2 stroke, or a 20 HP 4 stroke. The 20 would
give me the added 5 hp to get those 4 adults on plane without additional
weight in the motor over the 15. When we 1st bought our boat, the dink
was included, and at 1st it would barely plane with 2 adults. Addition
of a Doel-Fin made a dramatic difference in planing and a bigger
difference in stability. I wouldn't be without that inexpensive addition.
IMO, bigger is better for dink power, you don't have to run wide-open
all the time, but for those times you need a little extra power, it sure
is nice to have it available. If I could do it inexpensively, I'd bump
that 15 up to a 20 HP in a heartbeat.
