Hi Steve-
To attach the snubber to our rodes, we use a rolling hitch. The braided end of the snubber is the end that is hitched to the rode.
Large line, when rolling hitched to a "small" line cannot always grip it well and tends to slip. The braid allows the snubber to grip better, much better.
To put large and small into perspective, the rope rodes that we use are 3/4 or 7/8. Our snubbers are 5/8, 3/4, and 7/8.
We find that a once a snubber's size reaches 5/8, it starts to have trouble gripping our rodes, and if the rode was 5/8, it definitely does.
A rolling hitch made with fresh, right out of the box rope, may not slip (depending on the size), but with use, rope starts to harden-up, and its flexibility lessens, making it less able to do small radius turns, such as going around a rope or chain rode. The braid place in the end of the rope never looses enough flexibility and always grips well.
I keep trying to take pictures, but Jill keeps standing in the way. So I do not have any pictures of this snubber braid, but if you want some of Jill, I've got plenty of those.
However, Good Olde Boat published this snubber braid idea in the May/June 08 issue. If you want, I could mail you a copy of that article?
