"Just look at the efficiency & reliability
improvements in new 4-stroke gas engines compared to their 2-stroke
counterparts of a decade ago."

My experience is that the old, simple 2-stroke is much more reliable, however also far less "green" and MUCH noisier.
My ski-boat is powered by a 1985 Mercury V-6 that has never needed more than a plug change. It was just put back in the water and runs fine even on the 5 month old
10% alcohol fuel. It sounds like a threshing machine though, and always has, it's an XR-2 model designed for high speed on bass boats as has no induction sound deadening.

As for using outboards on "trawlers" it would damn sure make repowering a breeze :) Anybody make a larger diesel outboard? I believe Evinrude makes a small multi-fuel outboard that will run on diesel.

Looking at the York River from my office and it looks like it's time for a boat ride, calm, warm (air anyway, water's low 50's) and FINALLY sunny.
