My wife and I have a 1979 Defever 49 pilothouse and have lived aboard for 6
years (empty nest also). We researched liveaboard vessels/trawlers for 2
years before buying. We attended every on water boat show within 100 miles,
looked at Yachtworld.com religiously every day. We each had our specific
wants and needs when looking for a vessel:
1. blue water passagemaking capabilities (coastal cruising to Alaska and
Mexico)
2. pilothouse with good all around visibility
3. walk around queen bed
4. Plenty of closet storage
5. 2 heads (one for her, one for me)
6. Galley up on same level as salon for ease of entertaining
7. Economic fuel consumption (5 gal per hour or less)
8. Decent size back deck
9. Walk around deck (safety on bad weather)
10. good engine access (although you can't stand up)
11. the salty look of a pilothouse vessel
So with all these requirements, it kinda narrowed it down, and our budget was
around $200k which limited us to an older yacht. We got a great deal on a
boat that had been to alaska and zihuateneo twice, has naiad active
stabilizers, ~900 gal fuel capacity, and consumes less than 5 GPH. The
1979/80 era Defever hulls were built very thick and strong. You will here
stories of Defever owners who hit rocks and just ding the hull, no water
breach, so we know they are stout.
I could go on and on about the advantages, like the high bow, and the easy
entry through midship doors on both sides. let me know if you want more info,
I would be glad to talk about our favorite thing....the boat.
