I think the real answer to shaft seal systems is to "love the one your 
with".

The GFO packing lets a owners with the older systems keep a dry bilge 
and the newer systems work well. I can't see a cost/benefit to changing 
whatever system your boat currently has.

Either system, properly installed and maintained, are proven.
