We need to make sure we are talking about the same dripless seals. I have
the PSS seals and they have worked well. I have never heard of a
catastrophic failure of the bellows from seizure. I have seen a
catastrophic failure of the bellows on the Tides Marine seal. That being
said, I do know of a number of people that have them and have had absolutely
no problems. The PSS seal has a vent that is used in low rpm mode in order
to keep the bellows from trapping air when the boat is launched. It can
also use pressurized water from the engine to this same port and this is
recommended in higher rpm use. Since I have a displacement hull, I don't
use pressurized water. The only issues I have had is with having the
bellows slightly undercompressed and I would get leakage on one if we had to
reverse under power. It seems that the prop wash would introduce pressure
through the stern tube and on some occasions leak at the seal or out of the
vent tube. Since mine are easy to get to in the engine room I have not had
a problem checking and adjusting them if needed.
