T&T: Maxwell Windlass Question

I have a Maxwell 800 windlass designed for rope/chain
operation. However, I use all chain. My windlass has a part called
a "pressure arm". It's made out of plastic and mine broke
recently. Actually, it was spit out of the windlass by the chain running out.
My question is: Is this part necessary in an all chain rode? It
appears to me that its function is to hold the rope against the chain
gypsy so that there is enough friction to pull in the line. I don't
see that it does anything when the chain is running through.
Any thoughts?
