<snip>
I m installing a remote oil filter kit on my Westerbeke generator. The
existing oil filter on the Westerbeke is mounted sideways. <snip>
Mine's the same, I can easily drain the oil without making a big mess, just
do a Marin suggested with a bit of a variation...
I put a pig pad under the filter along the block, loosen the filter
slightly, then punch a hole in the facing surface at the opposite end
the sealing flange with an awl. That hole will be at the bottom before
the gasket breaks seal, and the oil will start to drain from the filter.
Catch in a small container, punch another hole near the top, and the
contents of the filter will drain into the container. The pig pad will
get the drips when the filter is unscrewed and can be used to wrap the
filter as it goes into a plastic bag. I've been pretty successful with
mess-free removals, although the 1st two probably wouldn't qualify!
