T&T: Remote mounting of oil filter - up or down

I m installing a remote oil filter kit on my Westerbeke generator.  The
existing oil filter on the Westerbeke is mounted sideways.   My main engine
a Ford Lehman has the oil filter mounted upwards so that the oil drains into
the sump when the engine is shut down.  

 

I am unclear for the generator whether to mount the oil filter so that it
will drain (top of filter is up) or so that it will hold the oil (bottom of
filter is up.  Nor am I certain it makes any difference.  Clearly it will be
less of a mess to remove if the bottom is up,
