"...Is there an anchorage in the vicinity of Liberty Island and Lady Liberty
in
New York Harbor?..."
Yes, it is in skipper Bob's we've stayed there several times. It is on the
south side of the Statute security zone on the Jersey shore. The charts
show it as a small basin with a boat ramp (which is busy with small boats on
the weekends). There is a large tender dock for the very exclusive golf
course at the end of the basin. You'll see the fancy club house under
construction. The launch "Liberty Launch 1" transports golfers from
Manhattan to and from the course and seems to enjoy waking you when at
anchor. No problem after it closes. Bottom is soft muck so use a fortress
or Danforth or the like. Also plan on a tedious washing of you chain(rode)
upon retrieval as bottom is a nasty muck). The anchorage has fairly good
protection behind a rock breakwater. I just use this basin as a staging
anchorage to go up the rivers with the tide, or south and out sandy hook.
No local amenities and I would NOT feel comfortable leaving a dinghy at the
ramp. If you want to visit Manhattan go up the Hudson to the 79th st Basin
Marina run by the State. It has the only reasonable mooring/slip fees there
and is convenient to all downtown area via rail or subway.
