Snip <We also have the Sinking of the Queen of the North in BC as an example
of electronics failing to assure a safe voyage.>

With all due respect Arild, the sinking of the North occurred at night with
3 working radars on the bridge, no evidence of any electronic malfunctions
and two people who had recently broken up a relationship left alone on watch
at night for at least 30 minutes. They apparently found an activity that
distracted them from seeing the rapidly looming radar image of Gil Island on
all three modern, high-tech radars. What activity would be interesting
enough to distract these two crew members from frequently checking their
navigation electronics while travelling 17 knots along a narrow segment of
the busy Inside Passage at night? The claim of a malfunctioning chart
plotter seems a little suspicious given the expensive array of alternate
navigation aids available to these 2 crew members. The real shame is that 2
passengers were never found.
