T&T: Speculation regarding the FL Registration

The way it works in Florida (and probably other states) is when you bring a boat into Florida, they compare the tax rate?in Illinois vs. the Florida rate. If the Florida rate is higher, then you pay the difference; if the Florida rate is less then?or equal to the Illinois rate, then you pay no additional sales tax. I suspect that is why you paid no additional tax when you registered your boat. The Illinois rate is probably equal to or higher then the Florida rate,?and you already paid the Illinois taxes when you originally bought the boat.?
I don't think it matters how long you've owned the boat.

This subject is confusing, but I believe that sales and use tax only apply
if you recently purchased the boat. Don't remember the interval.
I live in IL. Have my boat in FL and it is CG documented. When I decided to
hang around FL for an extended period, I registered it with FL, and recently
paid for the annual update. Other then these annual fees, I have not
encountered any other costs.

well, the legal advice we got was that staying beyond the 183 days a year
could expose us to use tax...
arent' those issues fun to deal with? :-)
