T&T: Heeling and fuel tank crossover

My non scientific but experiential contribution is that our 38' on the hull
TT, will take on a list as the sewage tank (55gal) fills. As it does, if the
balance tube is left open, the fuel will move to the low side (3/8
connector). This is confirmed by non-scientifically dipping the tanks with a
measured stick for the purpose. There is a point at which it reaches
equilibrium, about a 3 degree list to stbd with full tanks. The list is more
with near empty tanks. As I must be in the holy place for communion once a
day it a simple thing to make the appropriate adjustment for the day travel.
My current practice is always leave the balance closed.
Here is an overwhelming reason: if the vessel goes hard aground and takes on
a significant list with the balance open, you will loose fuel out the vent.
I just think of it as one of the many ways that the boat communicates its
needs with me; kind of a buddy system. There are similar hints in just about
every system, no meters needed, just a sharp ear to what the boat is saying.
