That's an interesting idea.  Don't discount the buoyancy of those  
round fenders, especially the larger ones.

I have 2 moorings.  One has 3/4" chain and the other has 1" chain.   
Both are in 25 - 35' of water (depending on tide) with a 2.5:1 scope -  
so a good 75' of big chain can be lifted off the bottom at times.   
This entire setup is supported by a single large round mooring buoy at  
the surface.  I've been using the same buoys for 6 years now.  They're  
supporting a lot of weight all year round - even through the Maine  
winter.
