You have a point, Capt. Bill.
On my previous boat I used a Bruce for ten years, and I have to admit it did
drag that one time in a gale. Turned out the bottom was the consistency of
pea gravel. Tried the Danforth backup and that dragged. Eventually tied to
a tree on shore. That held. It was a big tree.
Perhaps we should all start packing a tree with us.
Incidentally, the tests I've read, for what they're worth, have indicated
consistently that the Bruce was among the fastest to set in a wide variety
of bottoms, and reset when the wind changed direction. And an oversized
Bruce, once set, won't drag, just like any other oversized anchor.
