T&T: Corroseal rust Convertor

Larry and all,

Ten years ago I bought a 56' steel boat that had been replated and the whole
hull sandblasted, 5 years before. The yard had primed the bare steel and
then the owner went bust. I bought the boat and brought it from RI to
Savannah, Ga. on it's own bottom as a gutted project. The primer was very
old and soon after the trip the exterior began to show signs of rust pitting
under the primer. Since I couldn't dry dock the boat just yet to tend to
the exterior paint, I searched for a rust conversion product to halt the
oxidation that had begun under the failing primer - caused by the exposure
of salt water and spray from the trip.

I found Corroseal on the internet and read the whole website. The
difference I found was Corroseal was also a *primer and was water based*.
That meant that I could put it on while the boat was in the water without
worrying too much about a few drips into the water below. I coated the
entire exterior hull and immediately the hull turned very ugly with the
conversion taking place on any rusty areas. It even darkened the primer in
places that I though were ok. I believe what happened was that the primer
became pourous when failing and the Corroseal converted behind it as well.
I then painted the hull with a coat of Interlux two part off white paint and
when about the business of starting the interior building.

The Corroseal proved to be a very positive experience as the boat was sold a
couple of years later with no re-rusting on the hull. It was sold to a
gentleman in Britain and as far as I know it still sits in Savannah as he
never had it transported there. I visited Savannah and boat every couple of
years and the paint held up for almost 8 years before spots began failing
again and the rust was again activated from lack of maintainence and sitting
idle for years with no washing of the hull - sitting in salt water.

I originally bought a 5 gallon bucket of the stuff and to date I have about
a quart left. I have coated trailers, cars, metal railings, posts, and
everything else I needed too, in my business and at home, with the leftover
Corroseal....and would never use anything else. I gave my son a quart and
he loves it too after using it on his trailer and other things. All you
have to do is wire brush off the loose scale and paint away. It turns black
almost immediately and when dry can be overcoated with anything. what more
could you want?
That five gallons has gone a long way for me and I will buy more when I need
it....for sure.
