Michael:
I have a two year old Raymarine system that uses Navionics Gold chips. I have used it from Florida to currently Massachussets and it has always performed flawlessly.
The cartography is extremely accurate. Markers are never more than 50' out of position and usually much less. I have used it to navigate the ICW in pitch black night, something I wouldn't choose to do, but sometimes unavoidable.
In respect to uncharted hazards I think all systems have to rely on the NOAA data source and it can't get any better than that. You just have to hope that they picked up all of the data that NOAA has to offer.
Outside of the US I understand that some cartography vendors have commisioned their own soundings, but I don't have any feedback.
This will be an interesting thread to follow.
David
