Hi Larry I'll preface this by saying we are the distributors of POR-15 in
Australia.
POR-15 is an excellent rust preventative paint, if all the directions are
followed. Normally you'd use the Marine Clean to de grease and clean and
this includes salt residue. Then the Metal Ready which removes rust and acid
etches the metal. Both left on for 1/2 hr before washing off with fresh
water. We recommend three coats of POR-15 Rust paint in a marine environment
and this must be top coated if it's exposed to uv.
In the words of one customer, a yachtsman that had just completed a 2 1/2
year circumnavigation on a steel boat was "it's the only thing that has
worked and I've tried them all it's so tough you can drop a bucket on it and
it doesn't chip".
If you want to contact me off line I can give you more info as I don't want
to seem to be pushing our products.

Has anyone used a rust converter paint to preserve rusting ironwork in a
marine environment? I have a old boat lift in a tidal area with steel
supports
