Bryan, The engine does not necassarily determine what transmission he has. Several different transmissions may have been used by the same builder with the same engine or changed out by previous owners. Determining the transmission might help if there is still a visible plate somewhere. You should never overfill a transmission. I have not encountered a marine transmission that needs to be run to check but I am not a mechanic. There should be hash marks on the dipstick and the transmission should be filled to that point. The type of fluid is also important since using the wroung fluid will also damage the transmission. I know this does not answer your question but he might want to have a mechanic do a quick eyeball of it and may know just what it is. Chuck
