When I was installing Raytheon autopilots in a dealership, there was
always a sticker or two in the box saying "CAUTION MAGNETIC SENSOR"   The
intent being to place it in a visible location for exactly the reason you
just illustrated.
I guess this was something else that got cost reduced in the transition to
Raymarine. (sigh)
