I agree with you, but with all the failures that I see, when called to repair
broken items, it is usually the "engineered" items that I see broken, not the
"too strong" items.
Flexibility is a different subject, with different parameters and
requirements; my statement was not addressed to it.
There are other factors to also consider in the design phase, and fuel economy
is just one. Heft can contribute to a more comfortable motion, as one example.
You made a good point and hopefully it will help someone avoid a failure.
