T&T: Batteries?

I just read a portion of Steve Dashew's article on batteries. He prefers
"Traction" batteries. He mentions that Trojan no longer makes this type of
battery and references a company which does. I would appreciate any input
to hasten my research of "deep discharge" types of batteries. From the
typical deep discharge type, both flooded wet cell and AGM types. Battery
makers such as Trojan, Deka, and Rolls/Surrett seem to have good batteries
with their particular following. Steve also mentions the battery cap which
converts the battery off gas back to water which limits the checking of
flooded wet cell to once a year or so. I like the idea of the smaller 2
volt units which make up the standard 8D size made by Rolls/Surrett.

But, my primary question is the "Traction Battery" and how does it differ
from a high quality deep discharge made by many reputable manufacturers?
