First, there are now electric bow thrusters capable of extended continuous
use. They probably cost more.
Third, you asked about price. In the Annapolis/Solomons' area, a
conventional bow thruster and installation used to cost (3 years ago)
$12,000 to $14,000. One member of this List did a magnificent job of
installing an electric bow thruster himself for the cost of materials. Of
course, he was a most practical and talented mechanical engineer who
thoroughly researched and thought-out the task ahead of time.
Even in this economic slump, the yards I know of have not lowered their
labor rates as their costs haven't gone down.
