T&T: After Market Installations

When a boat manufacturer is adding accessories to an engine, in order to
get the engine builder to sign off on the installation, someone with
engineering experience generally will have to examine the specifications
for power takeoff, fuel system, etc.

Taking power off an engine is not simply a matter of hooking up a belt.
The strength of materials, bearing and shafts, has to be taken into
account. The specifications will generally be in so many pounds of side
load or whatever. Power takeoff systems expressly built for the job will
have limitations of so much horsepower, speed, torque, etc.

After market installations often times never take these limitations into
account. In point of fact, the majority of installers don't even know
about the problem. Belt driven installations that exceed the side
loading specifications of the crankshaft will generally cause premature
failure of the nearby bearings. A consequence which may not become
evident until many years or hours of operation have gone by.
