T&T: Fuel Polishing Question

Jim,
I was also concerned with what to do with the fuel returning to the
tanks. I wanted good circulation, and wanted to avoid foaming and the
potential of fuel oxidation. (I've never read a discussion on foaming or
fuel oxidation, but I can't believe it does stored fuel any good.)
I spent a lot of time pondering what to purchase and how to install the
ideal fuel polishing system for my vessel, then did it, made some minor
changes, and now have what I think is a good system for my tanks. The
T&T List provided a lot of insight, and I'm sure that someone could shoot
a few holes my setup. I'm still open to ideas and suggestions and would
change things if a better way presents itself. I went with a 180gph
positive displacement pump and 2 micron Racor 1000 filter, and included a
magnet device for smiles.
Plan A was to add drop lines to the tank bottoms from the fuel transfer
system returns but due to the tank baffles, we couldn't reach the
fittings. So, we installed stainless bulkhead fittings and dropped
nitrile hose down to the bottoms and across to corners opposite the fuel
pickup ports. The hose is fuel rated and has a nitrile outer cover, and
back pressure is not a problem. Time will only tell what accumulates on
the tank bottoms.
After triple-checking the valve lineup and starting the pump, I verify
correct flow both from and to the tank by slightly closing the suction
and then return valves and observing the vacuum gage.
Fuel polishing, like fuel transfer, is a serious task that we undertake,
and requires forethought and constant monitoring. Be safe and be
careful. If I can answer any questions you or others may have, please
contact me off-list.
