i can remember loran c's early epitaphs in the mid 70's. in '76, believing
the epitaphs, i sprung for an omega (VLF) that "was so efficient that eight
stations would service the entire world." of course, loran-c continued to
defy the electronic seers. then sat nav's were the rage (my first magnavox
cost 17K) and still loran-c survived. now we have gps's coming out our
ears, in our cars, computers, boats, watches, ad nauseam, and once again
loran-c is down for the count. i don't think i'd bet against loran-c. when
we leave south caroliina next week for the dominican republic, we'll have
the gps but we also take a sextant, a chronometer and HO 249.
