T&T: Self Amalgamating Tape and UV exposure

Keith mentioned using self amalgamating tape to waterproof his wire splice.
I've used some to seal a GPS mount where the plastic meets the stainless and
have recently noticed it's splitting.  I can only assume it's the UV
exposure that has caused the tape to lose it's elasticity.  Anyway, unless
your willing to replace it every few years I'd refrain from using it.
