T&T: Antennas

I like old fashioned things that are robust and have been proven. Our SSB
antenna is a headstay of 3/8" 7x19 SS wire insulated by means of inexpensive,
fail-safe "egg" insulators. Works great and no worries about joints or support
brackets. No need to lower for bridges. Also a good hand-hold and a place to
hang the laundry. I'm thinking of having a hank-on sail made in case the
engine quits.

I am also leery of the new kid on the block. Years of reading this list
have shown problems with DA stuff but I have not heard that Shakespeare was
anything but good - I see them on almost all fishing boats and yachts on the East
Coast. We have several Shakespeare antennas that are trouble-free. I guess
if I were on the West Coast I would buy a Morad because of recommendations
seen here and shipping costs.

A few years ago before we agreed "no TV" I looked at the imported Glomex
antennas which were highly advertised. But why would I buy one when all the
boats I see have Shakespeare TV antennas? Let someone else be first on the block.
When they crow about them I may consider one.

no connection.

Regards,

John
