'Lo Garrett and All,

I bought two different backup systems for our RV. I intended the
system to be used continuously. After about 3 hours of continuous use
of the first system - a license plate back up system, the case for
the little display melted..yes, melted. It was so hot I could not
touch it. Fuse (sized properly) did not blow. As stated in the
documentation, it was intended for intermittent use. Read that as
ONLY for intermittent use. I haven't installed the second system yet,
but it is made for RVs and for continuous operation. Hope it works......

I do have a rear-view system for the Celestial. It uses a regular,
but modified TV system comprised of a "baby monitor" and 2 cameras.
It is fully described in the archives and works very well. Its only
drawback is that the cameras are not waterproof, so any camera used
outside must be in a case or, as I found out, a clear plastic bag
pulled snuggly over the lens to prevent distortion. I assembled it
before I knew about places like Super Circuits ( supercircuits.com )
- where you can get all the various components to assemble a good
quality system made for the purpose, or a ready made system. Be sure
to get the proper lens for the distance you want to see. I have a
wide angle camera that takes in the whole engine compartment, the
other is more "normal" and works well for boats approaching from the
rear and should be useful in docking (I haven't used it for that purpose yet).

>Yes, "wireless" 'license-plate' cameras are available at Costco etc.,
>or any auto parts store for under $60. BUT, the wireless connection
>refers only to the signal between the camera and the display. The
>camera and the display still require wired power and an on/off switch
>at the helm - the license plate cameras are wired into the back-up
>light circuit and go on and off automatically. Since these cameras are
>really unsuitable for the use we make of them, you might as well buy a
>better-quality wired set-up.

No connection with Super Circuits other than as a satisfied customer.

Take care and be safe.
