Mike - right on ... and what do you do when the size and shape of the USB
device takes up two or three USB slots? Use a short pigtail type extension
cable. Shorter the better and all is well again.

Subject: T&T: Skype & USB

A while back I mentioned that I had purchased a Dlink DPH50U adapter to
use a regular phone to make skype and skypout calls with. This is a
pretty slick system for making calls to and from overseas and of course
will work with your laptop.

However, I have had a lot of trouble with it. And here is the solution.

The original driver 1.0 and the documentation manual were the source of
the problems. The latest driver 1.1 helps and the manual explicitly says
that the DPH50U USB cable must be hooked directly to the computer not
through a hub connected to the computer.

The underlying problem seems to be related to duplication of delayed
procedure calls, which then use up 10-30 percent of total CPU time.

This implies that all USB connections may be helped by hooking directly
to the computer and not through a hub. If I were you and had any
important hookups by USB and they were connected to a hub instead of
directly to the computer, I would change that right away.

US Robotics has a similar device USR 9260 that is almost identical to
the DPH50U.

This bit of information has taken almost 6 months of tinkering to find
out as there is nothing on the internet about it that I could find. And
the original documentation failed to mention the requirement.

By the way, you can test all this by bringing up the Windows Task
Manager and watching the Performance Tab. You can test for these kinds
of problems just by connecting your USB cable to the hub or then the
computer and watching the CPU usage. When the product is not active
there should be very little CPU usage.

Regards,
Mike
