>>perhaps you did not read my follow up post "That actually depends on
what you pay for your policy and what you request. Markel will write one
policy with limitations at Savannah and another policy will read
Hatteras. Or you can pay the high premium and not have limitations."<<
Actually I wrote that before your follow-up posting, but it was delayed
due to a change in my e-mail address to Al at IMIS.pro.<<
>>and perhaps I should have said many, not most. But we have yet to
meet a cruising boat on the waterway this year that did not have
Hatteras for the northern limitations and most told us first hand that
this had been changed from their previous policy and a substantial
increase was ask if they planned on being south of that point. Is my
statement above incorrect regarding same companies requiring different
limitations?<<
Yes. In fact, some of the primary companies in the market that use
Hatteras as their limitation won't allow boats to be south of Hatteras
(as an example) during the tropical windstorm season for any amount of
money. Others will extend their limit down to Cumberland Island for a
slight additional premium. But, most charge one rate for limited
coverage, and a surcharge for unlimited coverage, with no middle ground.
You absolutely must NOT depend on hearsay to determine what's going on
in that, or any other facet of marine insurance. Marine insurance is NOT
a regulated line of insurance, and rules and rates are whatever the each
company decides they will be. You really need to find an independent
agent with a lot of options to find you the coverage that fits your
itinerary....
