Finally got to the bottom of it and it's kind of a catch 22. Although 
Verizon most likely doesn't monitor how you use your data, they certainly 
monitor how much you use. Their "unlimited" data is fine for essentially 
unlimited surfing the web, emails and watching the occasional YouTube video. 
You probably won't come close to the 5 GB limit that's in the fine print. 
And yes, you can monitor your usage on their website.

So. if you are on cable or DSL, go for Skype; it can save you money. But if 
you're on an aircard, use it judiciously; you can get in a bind. If you go 
over 5GB too much and too often, they'll cut you off.

New technology's coming out this year and it isn't clear how this will 
affect the situation.
