T&T: Copper pipe for earth connections in SSB radio.

You appear to be mixing the terminology and requirements for a ground system
for SSB radios.

A ground plane is associated with a type of VHF antenna and not to be confused
with a ground system used in conjunction with an antenna tuner.

You are correct in stating that copper pipe is a suitable alternative to
copper foil, just flatten it to occupy less space. Unless a considerable
amount is installed it will not give enough surface area. This flattened pipe
is however ideal for connecting to the engine mass and any other large metal
surfaces in contact with the water. A special plate namely the "Dynaplate" has
been available for many years to provide the necessary surface area. This is
a block of sintered bronze that allows water to permeate through the block to
provide a large area in a small volume. They are available in at least three
sizes. Pipe runs to these plates should be as short as possible.

Hope this helps
