T&T: Installation of Transmitters aboard vessels

Mike, I believe your statement applies to Commercial installations and not
pleasure vessels. If that were the case a full 90% of SSB installations would
be illegal. And there is no stipulation on the FCC application for the install
by a licensed tech. In all of my years of installing SSB as part of what I do
for a living I have never met an FCC licensed tech. Many SSB radios are
installed on new boats and I can attest to the fact that no factory I have
dealt with has a FCC licensed tech on premisis. Icom and most other SSB
manufacturers sell their radios as a do-it-yourseld project. Chuck

FCC rules require an FCC licensed technician to install Marine SSB sets
(80.169). Ham radio transmitters can be installed by the operator, if
properly licensed. This does not mean that a HAM can legally install a
marine SSB set that will be used in the Marine bands, just because it
can or will be used by a licensed Ham, in the Ham bands.

All this presents some problems for US Flagged vessels built in foreign
countries and where the SSB set is installed at the factory. However, I
think anyone can hold the correct FCC license to do installations,
regardless of what country they live in or are citizen of.

VHF and radar sets can be installed by a non licensed individual if done
by or under the supervision of the station licensee, if the vessel is a
voluntarily equipped one. If a commercial or if required to have, the
installation has to be by a licensed technician. See FCC rules part
80.177 and 169.

Regards,
Mike
