"A listee mentioned a serious charge on Verizon usage over 5GB. I thought my
Verizon Aircard had unlimited usage."

Yes, unfortunately all of the wireless companies have instituted a 5 gig per month limit on their 3g air cards.
The last to not have this cap was Altell and they are now part of Verizon.

However, I have had a Sprint EVDO card as my only internet for a few years and while my term of service now list this cap (Sprint instituted the cap in June 2008) they have not enforced it, I consistently go over, though only by a gig or two a month and have received no charges, or letters threatening to cancel my service. I know Verizon users who have been canceled for going over repeatedly. I am assuming that Sprint is leaving me alone because I have been with them for so long and they can't afford to lose any more subscribers (my cell phone is with them too)

Hopefully when Sprint/Clear get 4g WiMax service running in more areas (Baltimore and Portland are the only cities currently served) they will leave it unlimited as the current 4g sites are. What Verizon will do when they start rolling out their LTE 4g next year is anybodies guess.
