I recently had my generator raw water pump impeller shred itself. Before replacing it I back flushed the heat exchanger and the line from the pump all at once. After this I noticed the hose coming out of the pump looked worn so I decided to replace it. After removing the hose from the heat exchanger I noticed a piece of impeller sticking out. I took a small screw driver and removed a couple full impellers and many small pieces. The large piece seems to of stopped the others from back flushing out although I did have good water flow.
I am very glad I decided to replace the hose and next time will flush the hose and heat exchanger separately.
