Our solution was a simple easy application. We sew 1 inch wide strips of webbing into the links, 1 strip at 50 feet, that is our minimum, 2 strips at 75 feet, 3 at 100 feet and so on. It is easy to tell at a glance how much is out, the webbing which is sticking out 3 inches from the links, that means a 6 inch piece, seams to last for years and easily goes over our windlass like it isn't there. It doesn't matter what color it is since you only need to be able to count to about 10 to remember it and the webbing in most cases has outlasted the chain and we anchor a LOT. At night we can tell by feel just how much rode is out. The webbing can also be sewn through the rode. Chuck
