T&T: Borg Warner Transmission

I have a B-W model 10-14 transmission mounted to a Ford Lehman 135 on a
Grand Banks 1990 36 operated through Morse Teleflex cabling. Recently the
transmission got stuck in forward, fortunately not at an inopportune moment.
I disconnected the Teleflex cable from the transmission, found the lever
stuck, but it responded to a gentle hammer tap, and would work freely as
long as the lever wasn't extended to its full throw in forward. There's no
problem in reverse. I lengthened the Teleflex cable about 1/8" and the
shifting problem disappeared for about 50 operations, after which it
re-appeared. If I'm careful about shifting from neutral to forward so that
the transmission just engages, all is well.

Question: is this indicative of the need for overhaul? Will I damage the
transmission if I repeat the cable adjustment problem so that the
transmission just barely engages? If I understand the B-W owner's manual,
there's a ball detent that once engaged, fully engages the transmission in
each of the three positions.
