T&T: 24V backup charger...

Another approach I have seen is a set of relays that 'reconfigure' the 
batteries as needed.  When you are using the thruster, it connects them in 
series to provide 24v.  When the thruster is off, it connects them in 
parallel to look like a 12v battery.

In that way you can just use a common 12v 'echo charger' or such to top off 
the forward batteries.

I understand these are rather common for larger trucks.  Might locate one at 
a truck suppler or shop.  Couple of hits from Google.
