T&T: anchor sentinel or kellet

For chuck Rood:

Chuck, I also have about a 25-35# Lead Kellet that I use on Chain when I
think it may be breezing up a bit. This method has been used for hundreds
of years. Some Captains tied a large amount of Chain about 1/3rd to 1/2 way
up the chain road. This increases the catenary and adds a shock absorbing
factor as the entire weight must be lifted in addition to the chain to have
the chain bar tight. Sometimes it is a pain in the A.. As it can drag on
coral etc and get bound up in other things on the bottom. If setting for the
first time with a Kellet, the anchor sees almost a horizontal chain until
the Kellet is lifted - assisting the anchor to dig in faster.

It is a very good "Extra" for those of us who anchor a lot. Mine is made
with lead about the size of a large brick with a SS eye screw and a small
shackle. A heavy Free weight with chain and a shackle would do it seems or
any thing that is heavy and pull the chain down. "Belt and suspenders."

For the past 25 years on both my sailboat and now trawler, I always send a
20 lb anchor sentinel or kellet down the anchor line when I anchor. We
dragged once in all that time.
