Although FRS radios seem to always be sold in pairs, there is no need
to use them in the original pairing. Radios from any manufacturer
will work with radios from any other manufacturer.
Canada also has an FRS radio service, using the same frequencies as
the US, so radios bought in the US can be used here in Canada without
concern of interfering with licensed services.
Europe (and perhaps other areas) have a very similar service called
PMR446, which operates around 446 MHz, while our FRS is on 466 MHz.
You should not use FRS radios outside the US and Canada (maybe Mexico
and the Carribean - don't know if they have similar services, or what
frequencies they may use, if they do.)
