I'd suggest that even if you don't have the skills or interest to work
on the engine, you at least carry spares for readily replaceable items
like belts, impellers and filters, as well as some spare oil and
transmission fluid.
Even if you can't or won't replace these things yourself, you can
probably find someone who will.
And even in a big city, you may have trouble finding the right part
right away. Here in Vancouver, I once had to wait a month or so to get
a Yanmar water pump belt - fortunately, it was just to replenish my
spares, so didn't interfere with my boating.
