T&T: running the genny, A/C and window covers

"I'll definitely try and position the exhaust away from other boats and
downwind
if I can though", is a bit difficult to do on a mooring since they are
assigned most of the time so you don't have a choice and the boat is going to
constantly shift positions with the wind, tide and currents. That would mean
you would pretty much be the only boat there. We don't run the generator all
night because of potential carbon monoxide leaks even with detectors. We will
run it long enough to cool down the cabin and then let the fans keep the air
moving. I think that most who object to generators running do so when they are
trying to sleep. Chuck

If you're not going to run the genny for a/c, I suggest you get window
covers to cut down on the thermal transfer. the one's that look like
colored screening work very well.

Those special separator/mufflers also look interesting but is the water
noise really that bad? It's not too bad of a noise for me and I've been
next to boats in close quarters that ran them all night. Unusual, but it
happens.... I think if you obsess on generator noise, it's going to bother
you a lot more than if you just "let it go".

It's a matter off necessity, planning and coordination....We usually run the
genny twice a day to maintain/top up the cold plate refrigeration/freezer.
Morning and evening. Then at the same time, everything else needing ac
power can tag along...batteries, inverter, coffee maker, washer, computers,
cell phone chargers, vacuum, etc. And the aircon...it can be pretty hot in
the summer, particularly after a run with a couple of tons of hot metal in
your belly....them big cat diesels don't cool down too quickly! Not used as
much at anchor but nice to have when you need it. (I have yet to spend a
night in an official mooring field though...maybe Marathon, next year) I'll
definitely try and position the exhaust away from other boats and downwind
if I can though.
