That certainly shouldn't degrade your hoses like that. I use Clorox toilet
bowl tablets in mine. Break one up and drop a chunk or two in. They last
longer and I've never seen any degradation of the system, hoses, etc.

I guess it depends where in Florida you are.  In Clearwater, 50 miles N of
Gil, I use a 1" pool chlorine tab in my strainer each week!  Even  so, I
still
have to replace my A/C raw water hoses annually.
