Dave,

One of my Twin Disc Manuals is # 1016313 titled
Marine Transmission Operator's Manual, and is for
a variety of TD gears. Original date March 1996,
updated to Rev 2, dated May 1999. As you said,
this manual just says to go by the oil specs on
the plate. Kinda SOL if you don't have that plate.
The other Twin Disc Manual is SM-179 # 1015924,
Rev. 2 titled: Model MG-502 and MG-502-1 Service
Manual (for) Marine Transmission Conventional, dated March 1982. It says:
Use API service class CD engine oils
which is certified by the oil company to pass
TO-2 or C-3 Test Specification. Also approved are
SAE API service class CC engine oil and MIL-L-2104B.
Oil viscosity: Note. Multi viscosity
oils (i.e. 10W-40, etc.) are not recommended and
should not be used in Twin Disc Marine Transmissions.
Weights: (Temps refer to sump oil temp and oil in heat exchanger.)
Steady operating condition below 1050 F
- This operating condition is NOT approved.
During startup, 320 F Minimum and steady
operating conditions of 150-1850 F: SAE viscosity number 30 engine oil
During startup, 320 F Minimum and steady
operating conditions of 175-2100 F: SAE viscosity number 40 engine oil
Steady operating condition over 2000 F -
This operating condition is NOT approved.
I don't know the vintage of your engines, but
this is what is applicable to my TD gears in the
Celestial. The engines were built in 1986.
Take care and be safe.
